Why tacho rolls matter at the roadside

If a DVSA examiner asks for a printout and the cab printer is empty, that's a Fixed Penalty Notice for the driver and a compliance black mark against the operator licence. Fleets running tight margins can't afford the prohibition notice either. Keeping a minimum of two unused rolls per cab is the easy answer; remembering to actually do it is the hard part.

How FleetPrint+ handles tacho stock

Register each truck once and tell us which tacho model is fitted. Set a standing-order frequency — monthly is typical for a daily-use vehicle — and we ship to the depot you nominate. Skip a month from the dashboard if a vehicle is off the road. Drivers raise short-stock alerts from the cab on their phone.

Storage and shelf life

Thermal paper degrades in heat and UV. Keep rolls sealed in their wrapper, in the cab door pocket or glovebox, away from direct sunlight. Roadside printouts that need to be kept should be filed in a folder out of light — exposed prints can fade within 12 months. Genuine paper from us carries a sealed 24-month shelf life from manufacture.

Frequently asked questions

Are tachograph rolls a legal requirement?
Yes. Under EU 165/2014 (retained UK law), drivers of in-scope HGVs must be able to print tachograph data on request from DVSA roadside inspectors. Running out of paper at the roadside is a Fixed Penalty Notice offence and can result in the vehicle being prohibited from continuing its journey.
Which tachograph rolls do I need?
All current Smart Tacho 1 and Smart Tacho 2 units (VDO DTCO, Stoneridge SE5000, Continental) use the same 57.5mm thermal print roll. Older analogue units use chart discs, not rolls. FleetPrint+ records each vehicle's tacho model so the correct supply ships automatically.
How many tacho rolls should I keep per vehicle?
DVSA guidance is a minimum of two unused rolls in the cab at all times. Fleets typically stock 4–6 per vehicle to cover long runs and shift handovers. Our auto-reorder defaults to a 6-roll standing order per truck, adjustable.
How long do thermal tacho rolls last?
Sealed in their wrapper away from heat and light, genuine thermal paper has a shelf life of around two years. Prints fade after 12–24 months if exposed to sunlight, which is why DVSA recommends storing roadside printouts in a folder out of direct light.
